About the Coton De Tulear Breed

The Coton is the "Official Dog of Madagascar," and a tri-color Coton was honored on a postage stamp in 1974. The Coton's ancestors were brought to Madagascar in the 16th and 17th century on pirate ships. It was the companion dog of the Merina (the ruling tribe) in Madagascar. It has very little prey drive and is not a hunting dog. The cottony coat may be the result of a single gene mutation. This small, friendly dog caught the fancy of the Malagasy royalty and for a time in Madagascar they were the only people allowed to keep Cotons. Although still rare, it has enjoyed considerable popularity with the Madagascar upper-class for some years and is becoming increasingly popular in the U.S.

Cotons are very friendly, gentle, affectionate, and alert. They are sociable dogs that get along well with children, other dogs and animals. They will become very attached to their home and master - wanting always to be in their presence and trying to please. The Coton makes a great watchdog. Full of tricks and surprises to fulfill his master's every wish. One of their most endearing traits is a tendency to jump and walk on their hind legs. Their teasing expressions enhance any home willing to spend a few moments a day in the necessary play and grooming routines. The long-living Coton learns quite quickly, but can be a little bit stubborn without the proper leadership. They are intelligent and eager to work and play. Who wouldn't want to snuggle with such a loving, non-shedding dog?
